It's finals week which means I'm eating chocolate-covered pretzels and catching up on TV from Monday. Deadspin already spoiled who got kicked off SYTYCD this week so I guess I don't really need to watch that, which is a good thing considering what I need to get done in the next 7 days.
But a lot of us are in that boat of OH MY GOD THIS WEEK SUCKS so I'll spare you the details. Instead I'll talk about what has now become one of my favorite ways to procrastinate: podcasts. I know I've talked before about how I'm usually pretty in-tune with all things technology and internet but it seems that some really huge tech stuff falls through the cracks. I got turned on to podcasts last week after the girl and I listened to This American Life while getting ready for Thanksgiving. I had listened to NPR a good bit when I was working at the bank so I was familiar with the program. And I think a few of you have mentioned it before. But I had just never really bothered to learn what kind of podcasts there were out there. I liked reading most of the news on my own and went to enough sports websites and watched enough ESPN to where I didn't need someone to dictate things I already knew so I never felt the need to see what was offered. But it's only been a week now and I've spent far too much time listening to Ira Glass and downloading Radio Lab for my own good. This shit is great, and I'm pissed I didn't know about any of it earlier. And now I just have another couple of hours of media to consume every week to get in the way of getting a good night's sleep and doing some quality schoolwork.

I listen to:
ReplyDelete1. This American Life
2. Wait Wait Don't Tell Me - the NPR news quiz show
3. Jordan, Jesse, GO! - Jesse Thorn and Jordan Morris' bi-weekly joke podcast. Consistently the funniest thing I hear.
4. The Sound of Young America - Weekly interview podcast by Jesse Thorn, interviews "people who are awesome." Generally interesting, worth skipping every now and again.
5. Free Darko: The Disciples of Clyde NBA Podcast - weekly guest who discusses sports journalism, probably the weakest on here but usually good.
6. Savage Love - Dan Savage's weekly sex advice podcast, never skip this one.
7. The College Years - backdated episodes of the Sound of Young America
8. The Penny Arcade Podcast - almost never updates, but really funny.
I used to listen to the Deadspin one but they shut it down.
I'd say that everyone on earth should hear the Savage Love one, and if you have the time Jordan, Jesse, GO! is generally worth it.
No one should ever be bored in the internet age.
About a year ago I became a podcast junkie as well. At this point they far outweigh the amount of music I listen to at work and on the commute.
ReplyDelete1. This Week in Tech - Remember TechTV? When Leo Laporte got screwed over by them he made the TWiT network. He just announced at TED his net worth is now $1.5 million and has doubled every year. FROM PODCASTING. Very much paving the way in new media.
2. Adam Carolla Podcast - similar thing, got canned from his radio station for ranchero music, does an hour every day shooting the shit with generally funny people.
3. Diggnation (video) - Kevin Rose, founder of Digg.com, and another dude drink beer and talk about a couple Digg stories. Not alot of substance, but been around for a long time.
4. This Week in Google - This Week in Tech, but just about Google. Yes, there is enough Google news every week to do 1 1/2 hours.
5. Totally Rad Show (video) - 3 guys review movies, videogames, tv, comics, and other nerd stuff. Nothing unique, but really high production value for a podcast.
6. Wine Library TV (video) - Gary Vaynerchuck signed a 7 figure book deal after doing 700 episodes, 20 minutes a day, talking about wine on common man's terms.
7. NBC nightly news (video) - rebroadcast from the night before
8. gdgt weekly - founders of engadget and gizmodo talk about gadgets. pretty good but too much mobile phone talk
9. Two Guys on Beer - quick, kinda neat, not a priority
10. TED video podcast
Clearly I lean on the tech/gadgets/interwebs side of things and some of it is just good @ work background noise, but nonetheless I feel crippled if I don't sync my iPod every morning.
